Event on sustainable banana production in Africa
A Café Banana was held at the end of last year in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, to explore opportunities to jointly develop a sustainable banana chain in Africa. The meeting was organized by Agri-ProFocus, a partnership of Dutch donor agencies, credit institutions, companies, fair trade organisations, training and knowledge institutions, with the goal to promote farmer entrepreneurship in developing countries. Banana scientist wins a Northern Territory's Australian of the Year Award
Rachel Meldrum of the Queensland Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries is one of the Northern Territory recipients of the Australian of the Year Awards 2009 for her work on the virulent strain of Fusarium wilt known as Tropical Race 4. She is investigating the role of weevils in the spread of the soil-borne fungus. |

Australian supermarket chain will stop selling Goldfinger
Goldfinger, or FHIA-01 (AAAB, Pome type), was grown by New South Wales banana farmers for Coles supermarkets in Queensland, Australia, but the supermarket chain will no longer stock Goldfinger, leaving the banana growers without market for their product. |
BGCI Report: Plants and climate change: which future?
Botanic Gardens Conservation International has launched a report on plants and climate change. The desk-based study includes input from international experts and presents a synthesised overview of the present state of knowledge about the complex relationships that exist between plants, climate and human livelihoods. The report includes a series of recommendations and actions that are required to prevent wide-scale loss of plant diversity under future climate change scenarios and will form the basis of an information service, which will be used to guide future policy and plant conservation actions. |
