New Task Forces on Fusarium wilt Tropical Race 4

Dear all,

In a meeting of the Steering Committee of the World Banana Forum (http://www.fao.org/wbf/en/), 10 and 11 of December 2013, it was decided to found a Task Force on Fusarium wilt Tropical Race 4, popularly known as the Panama disease.
The WBF Task Force TR4 had three phone conferences so far (December 18 2013, and January 15 and January 29, 2014).
The WBF Task Force TR4 will make use of the PROMUSA discussion forum and other platforms to keep you informed about its activities.
We decided to draft a call for action, here attached to this message, to all partners of the World Banana Forum and other stakeholders of the banana industry.
We would like to invite participants of the PROMUSA discussion forum to formulate comments on this call, and to propose additional elements for a sector-wide action plan against Fusarium wilt TR4. We sincerely hope that this will contribute to strengthen our efforts for a common and global strategy to face the threat of Fusarium wilt TR4.

In advance, many thanks for your valuable contributions.
Kind regards
Luud Clercx
(Coordinator WBF Task Force TR4)

Dear all

An African Consortium for FocTR4 (AC4TR4) has been established in November 2013 following the introduction of FocTR4 into a commercial Cavendish banana plantation in northern Mozambique. AC4TR4 consists of African universities, IITA, Bioversity International, NPPOs, NARs and other role players on the continent. A 5-year contingency plan to deal with FocTR4 on the continent has been developed that will be executed in three phases: containment, awareness and training, and disease management. Each phase will include a research component. Details of the African plan for FocTR4 will be discussed with stakeholders at a strategy meeting to be held early in 2014.

Please find attached more information on AC4TR4 .

Kind regard,

Altus Viljoen
