Taxonomic Reference Collection

The Taxonomic Reference Collection (TRC) is a set of 29 ITC accessions representing many of the subgroups of banana cultivars and the two wild species at the origin of most domesticated bananas, Musa acuminata and Musa balbisiana. The collection was started by MusaNet to address taxonomic issues such as the influence of the environment on the phenotype of cultivars1 . The accessions were selected by taxonomy experts (the original list has 33 accessions 2 ) and planted in 12 field collections located in the main banana-producing regions3 .

The genome groups and subgroups refer to the nomenclature system developed by Norman Simmonds and Kenneth Shepherd to classify cultivated bananas.
